GERALD GREEN (SG)
  • Jul 23 2016, 07:39 AM

Update: Green agreed Saturday with the Celtics on a one-year guaranteed contract for the veteran's minimum, Sean Deveney of Sporting News reports.

Analysis: Green has been a journeyman throughout his NBA career, bouncing around between eight teams in nine seasons to go along with stops in the D-League, Russia and China. It will now all come full circle for the veteran swingman, who rejoins the team that drafted him in the first round out of high school in 2005. The Celtics already have a trio of established guards on their roster in Isaiah Thomas, Marcus Smart, and Avery Bradley, but there should be some spare backcourt minutes left over for Green, who occasionally carried the Heat offense for extended stretches while coming off the bench last season. While he figures to open the season as a rotation player, Green will have to fend of youngsters R.J. Hunter and Jaylen Brown for minutes as the campaign progresses.

Update: Green (coach's decision) didn't see the floor in Friday's 103-91 Game 6 win over the Raptors.

Analysis: Green has gone unused in two of the last three games, even with Hassan Whiteside's ongoing absence due to a knee injury opening up extra minutes for multiple players on the second unit. It appears coach Erik Spoelstra is content to lean on Justise Winslow, Josh Richardson, Joe Johnson, Dwyane Wade and Tyler Johnson for all of the minutes on the wing.

Update: Green (coach's decision) didn't play in Monday's 94-87 overtime win over the Raptors in Game 4 of the series.

Analysis: It's the first time this postseason that Green failed to get off the bench. Coach Erik Spoelstra ended up handing most of Green's minutes to Justise Winslow on Monday, and with the Heat pulling out the win, it wouldn't be surprising if Spoelstra stuck with a similar approach in Wednesday's Game 5.

Update: Green scored 16 points (7-16 FG, 2-6 3Pt) and added three rebounds over 23 minutes in Sunday's 106-73 Game 7 win over the Hornets.

Analysis: With the Heat running away with the game in the third quarter, Green received his most minutes of the series, and capitalized on the extra run. He finished second on the team in shot attempts, while providing his most points in any contest since going off for 30 against the Kings back on April 1. Still, Green averaged just 7.7 minutes over the entire seven-game series, so look for him to see closer to that allotment of playing time during the Heat's second-round matchup with the Raptors.

Update: Green had five points (1-4 FG, 1-4 3Pt, 2-2 FT), one rebound, and one assist in 19 minutes during the Heat's 99-93 win versus the Pistons on Tuesday.

Analysis: Green's role has been erratic for much of the season, but he hit his monthly minutes average right on the nose Tuesday. He is contributing 11.5 points, 1.8 rebounds, 1.7 threes, and 1.3 steals in 19 minutes through six April appearances, and Green hasn't really done much besides score for the vast majority of his career.

Update: Green will start in Friday's matchup with the Kings.

Analysis: Green will be starting in place of Dwyane Wade. He has averaged 9.3 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 1.1 assists in 12 other starts this season. He makes for an intriguing play in DFS formats.

Update: Green played only five minutes in Tuesday's win over the Pelicans, missing his only shot attempt on the evening.

Analysis: The Heat's recent signing of Joe Johnson has effectively removed Green from the rotation, as he's typically been only seeing light minutes during non-competitive games. Green has appeared in seven of the Heat's 11 games thus far in March, averaging 4.7 points and 1.6 boards over 10.7 minutes.

Update: Green (coach's decision) didn't come off the bench in Sunday's 98-81 win over the Knicks.

Analysis: With the newly-signed Joe Johnson making his team debut Sunday and playing 30 minutes, Green's rotation spot was effectively eliminated, as starters Johnson and Dwyane Wade (32 minutes) along with reserves Justise Winslow (36 minutes) and Josh Richardson (30 minutes) covered all the playing time at the two wing spots. It's likely that coach Erik Spoelstra will expand the rotation from eight to nine men in the games to follow, but Josh McRoberts, who also went unused Sunday, would probably earn a spot before the struggling Green. Coming into Sunday's outing, Green had been held without a point in each of the previous three games while going 0-for-11 from the field and 0-for-4 from three-point land.

Update: Green will come off the bench in Wednesday's game against Golden State.

Analysis: Green got the start in Monday's win over the Pacers but he played just 18 minutes and didn't score a single point. His lackluster performance on Monday may be the reason he's returning to his bench role. He'll likely see a minutes load closer to his February average of 26.4 minutes per game after his abnormally low total on Monday, even though he is coming off the bench.

Update: Green will draw the start Monday versus the the Pacers, Ethan J. Skolnick of the Miami Herald reports.

Analysis: Green started the last two games for Miami due to Dwyane Wade sitting out, So many expected him to return to a reserve role in Wades return. However, the Heat will bring Justice Winslow off the bench and start Green at the small forward position instead. In his two previous starts Green posted 9.5 points, 3.5 boards, 1.0 assists, 1.0 steals, 1.0 blocks, and 1.0 triples per game. It is unclear if the decision to keep Green in the starting lineup is merely matchup related and temporary, or something the Heat would consider moving forward.

Update: Green only contributed five points (2-8 FG, 1-3 3Pt), two rebounds and a block in 29 minutes on Saturday in a win against the Wizards.

Analysis: Green was merely a bystander to the Goran Dragic & Hassan Whiteside Show on Saturday against the Wizards. On the offensive end, he found himself stuck in the corner on most possessions and wasn't able to get involved in any facet of the game. Green's role with the Heat is largely predicated on who is out of the lineup, so right now he could be beneficial to your fantasy team. However, once their lineup is back to normal, you can surely put him back on the waiver wire.

Update: Green will start at shooting guard again Saturday against the Wizards, the Miami Herald's Ethan Skolnick reports.

Analysis: With Dwyane Wade out again, Green becomes a very appealing option in daily leagues, although he will also be very heavily owned. He had 14 points with five rebounds, two assists and two steals in Friday's game.

Update: Green registered 14 points (6-13 FG, 1-3 3Pt, 1-3 FT), five rebounds, two assists, two steals, and one block in 37 minutes during the Heat's 115-111 win over the Hawks on Friday.

Analysis: Green earned the start with Dwyane Wade (knee) sitting out, and performed admirably in a close win over the Hawks. The Heat are right back in action Saturday versus the Wizards, and Green should be in line for big minutes and another starting nod, as Wade is set to undergo an MRI on his ailing left knee.

Update: Green will start Friday's game in Atlanta, Shandel Richardson of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.

Analysis: With Dwyane Wade (knee) out of the lineup and Tyler Johnson (shoulder) still sidelined, the Heat will turn to Green to man shooting guard Friday. With the potential for Wade to miss additional time, Green could be in line for a consistent starting role, which has equated to 10.3 points (on 38 percent shooting), 2.6 rebounds, 1.1 assists, 1.1 three-pointers, and 0.7 blocks in 30 minutes across nine nods this season.

Update: Green is averaging 7.6 points (on 38.2% shooting), 4.4 rebounds, 0.8 assists, and 0.6 treys across 25.4 minutes over five appearances in February.

Analysis: Since a four-game stretch in early January where he produced four straight games with at least 13 points, Green has reached double figures in the scoring column just twice in the last 14 games. The Heat value Green primarily for his three-point shooting, but with the veteran firing at a 19 percent clip from the outside over that 14-game stretch, a drop in court time could be coming in the second half.

Update: Green (illness) scored 10 points (4-10 FG, 1-4 3Pt, 1-2 FT) while adding three steals, two rebounds, an assist and a block in 20 minutes off the bench during Friday's win over the Bucks.

Analysis: He missed the morning shootaround, but was well enough by game time to suit up. It's actually the first time in eight games that Green has scored in double digits due to lingering knee and oblique issues, so the days off provided by the All-Star break can't come soon enough for Green.

Update: Green (illness) is working out in advance of Friday's game against Milwaukee and is expected to play, Jason Leiser of The Palm Beach Post reports.

Analysis: After missing Friday's shootaround due to an illness, Green's status was up in the air with tip-off approaching. However, his condition has improved and all signs point to him taking the floor against the Bucks on Friday. He has been shaky from the floor of late, shooting just 24.4 percent from the field over the last five games.

Update: Green is questionable for Friday's game against the Bucks due to an illness.

Analysis: Green missed the team's Friday morning shootaround due to the sudden illness. The illness comes on the heels of lingering injuries Green has been dealing with over the past week. An official decision on his status for Friday will likely be held off until after pregame warmups. If Green can't shake the bug before tip, look for Josh Richardson to possibly see more minutes off the bench.

Update: Green (knee, oblique) ended up playing 25 minutes in Monday's 89-84 win over the Bulls, finishing with nine points (4-12 FG, 0-4 3Pt, 1-1 FT), three rebounds, and two assists across 25 minutes.

Analysis: Green has been hampered by right knee tendinitis for over a week and has more recently been dealing with a strained right oblique, but because neither injury is considered particularly serious, he's continue to play on for the Heat with several other players on the roster dealing with more problematic ailments. Even though he's been able to take the court, Green has still been abysmal over the last six games, averaging just four points on 19.6 percent shooting from the field and 15.8 percent shooting from beyond the three-point arc. Perhaps once Goran Dragic (calf) or Hassan Whiteside (oblique) return to action, Green can finally pick up some much-needed rest.

Update: Green (knee, oblique) is questionable for Monday's contest against the Bulls, Ira Winderman of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.

Analysis: Green has been a regular on the injury report for the last week with right knee tendinitis to go along with a strained right oblique muscle, and though it hasn't forced him to miss any games, he's clearly been affected by the pair of ailments. Over the last five contests, Green has shot a pitiful 6-for-39 from the field. Some rest is probably needed for Green, but with the Heat listing seven other players on the injury report, the team may need him to gut it out Monday.
