PATRICK PATTERSON (PF)
  • Jul 18 2016, 12:50 PM

Update: The Raptors believe that Patterson is better suited to come off the bench, but he still may end up getting the most minutes at power forward, Josh Lewenberg of TSN Sports reports.

Analysis: When the Raptors signed Jared Sullinger, it was their intention that Sullinger would become the starting power forward while Patterson would continue from his role off of the bench. Patterson saw 26 minutes per game in the 2015-16 season, and averaged 6.9 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.2 assists per game. If he ends up getting the bulk of the minutes, it seems his role would only be marginally increased as he's usually the fourth or fifth offensive option on the court due to the Raptors' strong backcourt.

Update: Patterson finished with 11 points (2-8 FG, 0-4 3Pt, 7-7 FT), 11 boards, two blocks and one steal across 37 minutes in Sunday's 116-89 Game 7 win over the Heat.

Analysis: Patterson came up empty from long range and ended up going 1-for-14 from downtown in the final four games of the series, but he made up for his lack of offensive efficiency by attacking the glass. The 11 boards were his most of the postseason, and it seems likely that he'll continue to start over Luis Scola in the Eastern Conference Finals against the Cavaliers.

Update: Patterson finished with eight points (3-12 FG, 0-4 3Pt, 2-2 FT), six rebounds, one assist and one block across 40 minutes in Wednesday's 99-91 win over the Heat in Game 5 of the series.

Analysis: Patterson has seen at least 36 minutes while starting the last three games of the series, but because he's usually the fourth or fifth option offensively whenever he's on the floor, he's been unable to parlay the added playing time into any meaningful production. He's averaging an uninspiring 8.0 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.0 three-pointers across 39.0 minutes during that three-game stretch.

Update: Patterson will move into the starting lineup for Saturday's Game 3 against the Heat.

Analysis: The Raptors' offense has struggled for the duration of the playoffs, so coach Dwane Casey will mix things up and go with Patterson at power forward Saturday. DeMarre Carroll will shift down to small forward, while Norman Powell moves to the bench. Through the first two games of the series, Patterson has accumulated just four points, five rebounds and an assist in 35 total minutes.

Update: Patterson put up two points (1-4 FG, 0-2 3Pt), three rebounds, and one assist across 18 minutes in Tuesday's 102-96 overtime loss to the Heat in Game 1 of the series.

Analysis: After starting the final three games of the Raptors' first-round series with the Pacers, Patterson moved back to the bench in favor of Norman Powell and saw his minutes decline accordingly. He saw his fewest court time of any of the Raptors' eight postseason games to date and could be at risk of falling under 20 minutes with regularity in the second round if coach Dwane Casey chooses to embrace more undersized lineups.

Update: Patterson will come off the bench for Tuesday's Game 1 against the Heat, John Schuhmann of NBA.com reports.

Analysis: The Raptors plan on using a small lineup Tuesday, so they'll insert Norman Powell into the starting lineup and bring Patterson off the bench. In the Raptors' seven-game series against the Pacers in round one, Patterson averaged 8.7 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.1 assists over 27 minutes per outing. He could see a slight decrease in playing time by coming off the bench during Tuesday's outing, although most likely he'll still see minutes in the mid-to-upper-20's.

Update: Patterson provided seven points (3-10 FG, 1-4 3Pt), two rebounds, and one assist in 26 minutes during the Raptors' 102-99 Game 5 win over the Pacers on Tuesday.

Analysis: For the first time in the series, Patterson stepped into the starting lineup at power forward in place of Luis Scola, who failed to get off the bench in this one. Patterson actually matched his lowest allotment of minutes in the series despite garnering the start, but he could earn more extended time if he gets hot in Game 6 on Friday. Though he didn't have a great game, Patterson figures to draw the start again Friday while Scola likely remains buried on the bench.

Update: Patterson will move into the starting lineup at power forward for Tuesday's Game 5 against the Pacers.

Analysis: Patterson has been a more productive option than usual starter Luis Scola through the first four games of the series, so coach Dwane Casey will make a lineup switch. The rest of the starting five will remain the same, with Kyle Lowry and DeMar DeRozan in the backcourt, DeMarre Carroll at small forward, and Jonas Valanciunas at center. Patterson is averaging 8.6 points and four rebounds in 25.4 minutes during the series.

Update: Patterson scored 16 points (5-7 FG, 3-3 3Pt, 3-3 FT) while adding five rebounds and three assists in 20 minutes off the bench during Saturday's win over the Pelicans.

Analysis: It looks like he's fully recovered from the ankle injury that cost him two games earlier in the week. Patterson's minutes and production remain dependent on the opponent and game situation, though, which makes it tough to rely on him in most fantasy formats even when he's playing well.

Update: Patterson (ankle) will return to action in Friday's matchup with the Rockets.

Analysis: Patterson will return to the court after missing the previous two games for the Raptors with an ankle injury. Barring any setbacks, expect him to resume with taking on his usual workload. With the Raptors frontcourt as healthy as it has been recently, Patterson does not hold much value in season long or DFS leagues.

Update: Patterson (ankle) is listed as questionable for Friday's game against the Rockets, Raptors radio play by play man Eric Smith reports.

Analysis: Patterson missed Wednesday's game against the Celtics due to a sore ankle, and he's still bothered by the issue as Friday's matchup approaches. The Raptors will likely wait to see how the ankle reacts during pregame warmups, so Patterson could end up being close to a game-time decision.

Update: Patterson (ankle) will not play in Wednesday's game against the Celtics.

Analysis: Patterson's status for Wednesday's game has been all over the place in the past 24 hours. He went through shootaround and was briefly given the green light to play before being shifted back to questionable. Now that he's been ruled out for his second straight game, look for Luis Scola and Jason Thompson to see increased minutes. Patterson should be considered questionable for Friday's game against the Rockets.

Update: Updating a previous report, Patterson (ankle) is now being labeled as questionable for Wednesday's game against the Celtics, Raptors radio play-by-play announcer Eric Smith reports.

Analysis: Though Patterson was able to practice Tuesday and took part in the Raptors' morning shootaround, early reports of his return appear premature, as coach Dwane Casey simply said 'we'll see' when asked if the forward would play Wednesday. Given Patterson's activity the last two days, we'll consider him on the probable side of questionable, so look for him to see around 20-to-30 minutes off the bench in a matchup between two likely Eastern Conference playoff teams.

Update: Patterson (ankle) will play Wednesday against the Celtics, Ryan Wolstat of the Toronto Sun reports.

Analysis: Initially listed as questionable, Patterson went through shootaround and has been given the green light to return after sitting out Sunday's win over the Magic with a sprained ankle. Expect Patterson to return his usual role as the Raptors' first big man off the bench.

Update: Patterson (ankle) is listed as questionable for Wednesday's game against the Celtics, Josh Lewenberg of TSN reports.

Analysis: Patterson missed Sunday's matchup with the Magic due to a sprained left ankle, but he was a full participant in practice Tuesday, foreshadowing a likely return Wednesday. If that is indeed the case, Luis Scola and Jason Thompson would stand to see reductions in playing time.

Update: Patterson has been ruled out for Sunday's matchup with the Magic due to a left ankle injury, Josh Lewenberg of TSN reports.

Analysis: Fortunately, X-Rays on Patterson's ankle came back negative, but it's unclear how long he will be sidelined. The Raptors will have off until Wednesday against the Celtics, giving Patterson a couple of days to recover. Patterson's absence for Sunday's contest should result in expanded roles for Luis Scola and Jason Thompson.

Update: Patterson scored 14 points (6-11 FG, 2-4 3Pt), six rebounds, two assists, two blocks, and one steal across 20 minutes during the Raptors' 107-89 victory versus the Bucks on Tuesday.

Analysis: Patterson scored in double figures for the fourth time in the last five games. Over this recent span, he is averaging 11.8 points, five rebounds, 2.2 threes, 1.6 assists, 0.8 blocks, and 0.4 steals in 28 minutes per contest. Luis Scola continues to start, but Patterson keeps outproducing him from a fantasy standpoint.

Update: Patterson provided five points (2-4 FG, 1-1 3Pt), three rebounds, and one assist in 37 minutes during the Raptors' 99-97 win over the Cavaliers on Friday.

Analysis: Patterson managed to record a game-high +/- of +16 despite contributing very little statistically and committing four fouls and three turnovers. Meanwhile, starter Luis Scola's struggles continued, as he scored two points on one-for-five shooting and posted a team-worst +/- of -14 in only 11 minutes. Over the last five games, Patterson is averaging eight points, 5.4 rebounds, 1.4 threes, 0.8 assists, 0.6 blocks, and 0.2 steals in 31 minutes per matchup.

Update: Patterson has played in each of Toronto's five February contests and has averaged 5.6 points and 3.6 rebounds across 27.2 minutes per game.

Analysis: Patterson decisively belongs to the Raptor's dominant bench rotation boasting the likes of Cory Joseph, Terrence Ross and Bismack Biyombo, though barring a setback to starter Luis Scola, Patterson's role as a stretch four is unlikely to change. However, it should be noted that although he has seen his playing time increase over the course of the season, his recent production has been chipping away at his season averages of 6.3 points and 4.2 rebounds across 24.4 minutes per game.

Update: Patterson provided five points (2-5 FG, 1-4 3Pt) and two rebounds in 24 minutes during the Raptors' 101-81 win against the Heat on Friday.

Analysis: Patterson is posting nine points, 4.4 rebounds, 1.6 assists, 0.8 blocks, and 0.4 steals in 30 minutes per contest over the last five games. Teammate Luis Scola has seen only 20 minutes per contest over that same timespan, but they are each averaging 24 minutes per game on the season, and should be expected to split time at power forward fairly evenly over the course of season.
