ADREIAN PAYNE (PF)
  • Jul 26 2016, 15:43 PM

Update: Payne went for 15.5 points, 7.6 rebounds and 0.9 assists per game in eight Las Vegas Summer League contests.

Analysis: Despite his strong summer, Payne may not have even been the team's best player thanks to the shows put on courtesy of both Kris Dunn and Tyus Jones. However, Minnesota would be foolish to overlook Payne's strong performance. The former Michigan State product led the Timberwolves in the rebounding department this summer. Unfortunately for Payne, Minnesota has a plethora of bigs such as Karl Anthony-Towns and Nikola Pekovic which is likely to restrict much if not all of his production.

Update: Payne saw just 9.3 minutes per game in 2015, after averaging 24.8 minutes to conclude the 2014 campaign.

Analysis: The Wolves traded for Payne amidst the 2014 season, and the big man finished said campaign averaging 7.2 points and 5.4 boards across 24.8 minutes per game. However, Minnesota's drafting of C Karl-Anthony Towns this past summer left Payne without much playing time in 2015. Under interim HC Sam Mitchell, Payne saw just 9.3 minutes per game en route to averages of 2.5 points and 2.1 rebounds. Fortunately for Payne, the Wolves hired coach Tom Thibodeau to lead their squad for the foreseeable future. Thibodeau has a similar coaching style to that of Payne's coach in college, Tom Izzo, leaving it not too farfetched to think the big man could carve out a sizable role off the bench for Minnesota in 2016. Granted, if the Wolves were to draft another big man this offseason, Payne could alternatively see his role reduced even further.

Update: Payne recorded seven points, four rebounds, and three steals in Monday's 129-105 loss to the Rockets.

Analysis: Payne took full advantage during his nine minutes of playing time after not seeing any action in the Timberwolves' previous game. The second-year player took six shots from the field and went 3-6 at the free-throw line. His three steals were a career-high.

Update: Payne went scoreless (0-3 FG, 0-2 3Pt) but produced four rebounds and four assists in 11 minutes during the Timberwolves' 99-79 loss to the Clippers on Wednesday.

Analysis: Payne had not played in the five previous games, but matched his career high with four dimes on Wednesday. Still, it was the blowout nature of the contest that allowed Payne minutes, and he is not worth rostering in fantasy.

Update: Payne provided seven points (2-6 FG, 3-4 FT) and eight rebounds across 21 minutes during the Mavericks' 128-101 loss to the Mavericks on Sunday.

Analysis: Payne hadn't scored seven or more points in a game since back on Dec. 28, and his eight rebounds were a season-high. He averaged 2.5 points and 3.1 rebounds in 11 minutes per game during February, and even those were the best numbers he has been able to muster up since November.

Update: Payne had three rebounds but did not score in ten minutes in Friday's loss to Memphis.

Analysis: It looks like Payne will get some playing time off the bench with Kevin Garnett and Nemanja Bjelica out with injuries. However, he's not likely to get much more than ten minutes and won't take many shots (just one field goal attempt on Friday).

Update: Payne has played in three of the Timberwolves' five games since his Feb. 1 promotion from the D-league's Erie BayHawks and is averaging two points and two rebounds over 8.7 minutes.

Analysis: The Timberwolves brought back Payne after injuries to Kevin Garnett (knee) and Nikola Pekovic (foot) lingered longer than anticipated, but those absences in the frontcourt haven't exactly opened up big minutes for the second-year forward. He still ranks behind starters Karl-Anthony Towns and Gorgui Dieng and reserves Nemanja Bjelica and Damjan Rudez in the rotation.

Update: Payne was recalled from the D-League's Erie BayHawks on Monday, Jerry Zgoda of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports.

Analysis: Payne has held only an ancillary role for the Wolves this season, and he'll likely continue to spend stints with the D-League. The big man has appeared in only six games in January, totaling 35 cumulative minutes.

Update: Payne was assigned to the D-League's Erie BayHawks on Monday.

Analysis: Payne has seen limited action in 20 games for the Timberwolves, averaging just 2.7 points and two rebounds in fewer than 10 minutes per game. It's highly unlikely that he makes a significant impact at the NBA level this season.

Update: Payne provided two points (1-1 FG) and one rebound in three minutes during the Timberwolves' 117-87 win over the Suns on Sunday.

Analysis: Payne saw only three minutes despite the game being a complete blowout. He has only appeared in five of nine games during January, and can safely be left on waiver wires this season given that he is averaging fewer than 10 minutes per contest.

Update: Payne (coach's decision) didn't play in Monday's 110-106 loss to the Clippers.

Analysis: With Monday's game tightly contested throughout, Payne rode the pine for the second time in three games. Payne will still factor into the rotation during one-sided contests and on the occasions that Kevin Garnett is rested for one half of back-to-back sets, but as the team's fifth option in the frontcourt, his minutes will likely never be plentiful.

Update: Payne was held scoreless (0-6 FG, 0-1 3Pt) in his start at power forward Wednesday against the Magic. He added five rebounds and an assist over 16 minutes.

Analysis: Payne replaced the resting Kevin Garnett in the Wolves' starting five, but as expected, it was reserves Gorgui Dieng (21 minutes) and Nemanja Bjelica (19 minutes) that saw the larger shares of playing time in the frontcourt. With Garnett expected back in the lineup for Friday's game against the Pistons, Payne will more than likely return to a bench role and see very light usage.

Update: Payne will get the start Wednesday night in place of Kevin Garnett (rest), Jerry Zgoda of Star Tribune reports.

Analysis: Garnett will rest on the second night of a back-to-back, and the Wolves will go with Payne in his place. The second-year forward out of Michigan State is coming off of an eight-point, four-rebound performance in 17 minutes against Miami on Tuesday. While he could see a mild minutes boost, Gorgui Dieng and Karl-Anthony Towns are more likely to see increased run to compensate for Garnett's absence.

Update: Payne will likely return to a bench role after starting Tuesday against the Hornets.

Analysis: Payne started Tuesday due to Kevin Garnett sitting out for rest purposes, so Payne's likely return to a bench role is not at all surprising. The backup normally doesn't play much for Minnesota and he'll be lucky to see extended time against the Warriors on Thursday.

Update: Payne entered the starting lineup ahead of Tuesday's tipoff against the Hornets.

Analysis: Minnesota dealt with several last-minute absences ahead of Tuesday's game which ultimately lead to the rare start for Payne. Assuming that Kevin Garnett (rest) will return Thursday against the Warriors, Payne's stint in the starting five may be very brief.

Update: Payne scored nine points with six rebounds in 13 minutes in Thursday's lopsided loss to Miami.

Analysis: Payne was a healthy scratch in two of Minnesota's first four games and only got playing time when Minnesota fell far behind early. He's not going to get off the bench unless the game is a blowout or unless there are several injuries in Minnesota's front court.

Update: Payne did not play in Friday's win over Denver.

Analysis: Payne played just four minutes and did not score in Wednesday's game. He'll have a very small role off the bench unless injuries strike Minnesota's front court.
