SHABAZZ NAPIER (PG)
  • Jul 15 2016, 07:52 AM

Update: Napier sprained his left shoulder in Tuesday's 92-89 win over the Jazz and will miss the rest of the Las Vegas Summer League, Mike Richman of The Oregonian reports.

Analysis: After acquiring Napier on July 5, the Trail Blazers wanted him to pick up plenty of run in the summer league so that he could distinguish himself as the team's top reserve point guard, but that never came to fruition. After sitting out the Blazers' summer league opener, Napier made his debut Sunday against the Spurs, but exited early after suffering a scalp laceration. He was deemed good to go in advance of Tuesday's contest, but was only on the court for 15 minutes before suffering a more serious injury. Napier is expected to be ready to go for training camp, where he may need to make more of a splash than originally thought if he hopes to maintain a roster spot.

Update: Napier suffered a scalp laceration during Sunday's Summer League matchup with the Spurs.

Analysis: Napier took a knee to the back of his head and had to leave the game. He is questionable to return, and could have a possible concussion. It's not clear how serious his injury is, however there will likely be further updates if it's serious enough to cause him to miss more games.

Update: Napier is cleared to play in Sunday's Las Vegas Summer League matchup against the Spurs, Mike Richman of The Oregonian reports.

Analysis: Napier missed the Blazers' team opener on Saturday but will be on the court come Sunday night. The 24-year-old was traded from the Magic to the Trail Blazers earlier in the week in exchange for cash considerations. Heading into his third season, Napier should be a likely candidate to see major minutes over the course of Summer League, as he has a chance to be the main backup at point guard behind All-Star Damian Lillard.

  • Feb 15 2016, 12:32 PM

Update: Napier is averaging only 1.4 points and 2.0 assists per game through five February contests.

Analysis: Napier has seen consistent playing time off the bench this season, but he rarely tops 20 minutes, making him unownable in most fantasy formats.

Update: Napier had three points (1-4 FG, 1-2 3Pt), three assists, three steals, and two rebounds in 24 minutes during the Magic's 107-100 loss to the Bucks on Tuesday.

Analysis: Napier continues to see some decent time occasionally since C.J. Watson (calf) is injured. However, Napier is playing only 12 minutes per game over the course of the season, and he is best left on the waiver wire in fantasy.

Update: Napier (illness) scores five points (2-4 FG, 1-3 3PT) and dishes out two assists in 12 minutes of action versus the Hawks Monday.

Analysis: Napier missed Thursday's game due to an illness, but was able to return to action Monday. His minutes have been all over the board recently, but he likely will not see much time in the rotation when everybody is healthy in Orlando's backcourt.

Update: Napier (illness) has been ruled out for Thursday's game against the Raptors in London.

Analysis: Napier's absence will leave the Magic thin on depth at the point guard spot, but with Elfrid Payton (ankle) returning from a four-game absence to run the second unit and Victor Oladipo capable of handling big minutes as the floor general for the starters, the team should fare just fine without him. He'll have three full days to rest up before the Magic's next game Jan. 18 against the Hawks.

Update: Napier is dealing with an illness and is doubtful to play Thursday against the Raptors, Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel reports.

Analysis: Even if Napier were healthy for the contest, he'd likely be in line for a reduction in minutes, as Elfrid Payton (ankle) has been cleared to return following a four-game absence. Napier's illness should pass in time for the Magic's next game on Jan. 18 versus the Hawks, but his standing as the third-string point guard won't lend itself to much court time.

Update: Napier scored seven points (2-4 FG, 1-2 3Pt, 2-2 FT), dished four assists, grabbed three rebounds, and swiped one steal in 17 minutes during the Magic's 100-93 win versus the Nets on Wednesday.

Analysis: Napier earned the start to open the third quarter on Wednesday with Elfrid Payton dealing with an ankle injury and an illness and C.J. Watson out with a calf ailment, and Napier helped the Magic erase a seven-point halftime deficit with heady play. If Payton misses a game or two, Napier might earn the start if coach Scott Skiles elects to keep Victor Oladipo in his sixth-man role. Still, it doesn't sound as if Payton's injury is serious, and Napier's value, what there is of it, will likely be short-lived.

Update: Napier was kept scoreless (0-3 FG, 0-1 3 Pt) off the bench while logging a rebound and an assist in six minutes in Tuesday's win versus the Timberwolves.

Analysis: After seeing an increased role in the stead of C.J. Watson (calf), Napier's minutes have trailed off as of late. After averaging 20.0 minutes per game in the first six games of Watson's absence, Napier is down to averaging 9.3 minutes per game over the last four games. He's also averaging a mere 2.8 PPG and 2.0 APG. This isn't a good sign, especially considering Watson could be returning sometime during this road trip. Unless the 24-year-old can turn things around, playing time may be hard to come by once again.

Update: Napier scored 11 points (3-10 FG, 0-4 3Pt, 5-8 FT) and added nine assists in Orlando's 117-103 loss to Cleveland on Monday.

Analysis: Napier started the season with a very deep bench role as the team's third option at point guard, but his role has increased in the last six games due to the absence of C.J. Watson (calf). In those games, Napier is averaging 20 minutes per game and also posted a career high 22 points on Nov. 11 against the Lakers. He'll continue to get a lot of opportunities, at least until Watson regains his health and comes back into the everyday lineup.

Update: Napier failed to score (0-1 FG, 0-1 3Pt) in his two minutes of action Monday against the Pacers.

Analysis: Napier has been limited to only 7.9 minutes per game through Orlando's first eight contests this season. Playing time is going to be hard to come by for the second-year point guard because he's behind Elfrid Payton and C.J. Watson on the Magic's depth chart.

Update: The Magic exercised their 2016-17 option on Napier's contract Sunday, Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel reports.

Analysis: The team also picked up their options on Victor Oladipo, Elfrid Payton, and Aaaron Gordon. Napier is in line to serve as the Magic's third-string point guard this season behind Payton and C.J. Watson.
