NIKOLA VUCEVIC (C)
  • Jul 14 2016, 09:35 AM

Update: Coach Frank Vogel recently indicated both Vucevic and Bismack Biyombo would see plenty of time at center during the upcoming season, but wouldn't commit to either player in a starting role, Cody Taylor of Basketball Insiders reports.

Analysis: During his tenure with the Pacers, new Magic coach Frank Vogel prioritized defensive prowess first and foremost with his starting centers, and while Vucevic is a more skilled low-post threat than the likes of Roy Hibbert and Ian Mahinmi, his shortcomings on the other side of the court could make him an ill fit on a retooled Orlando roster. The team's decision to sign Bismack Biyombo, a relentless rebounder and rim-protecting center, to a four-year, $72 million contract this offseason would seem to suggest that even if he continues to start for the Magic, Vucevic will almost certainly see a decline in the 31.3 minutes per game he averaged a season ago. As one of the top-scoring centers in the league both of the past two seasons, Vucevic would still have plenty of appeal around the league, so it's conceivable the Magic could explore trading him in order to calibrate the roster according to Vogel's preferences.

Update: Vucevic (leg) managed 17 points (8-13 FG, 1-2 FT), four rebounds, and one assist in 20 minutes during the Magic's 117-103 loss to the Hornets on Wednesday.

Analysis: Vucevic missed Monday's matchup with Milwaukee due to a right leg bruise, but he was cleared to return for the Magic's season finale. Vucevic played just 20 minutes, but turned in a solid statistical effort in his limited time. Vucevic continues to raise his level of play on offense, but he still has much to improve on the other end if Orlando is truly going to fight for a playoff spot in 2016-17.

Update: Vucevic (leg) will play and start in Wednesday's matchup with the Hornets, Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel reports.

Analysis: Vucevic missed Orlando's previous contest against the Bucks, and was considered questionable heading into Wednesday evening. However, barring any setbacks he is listed to start in Orlando's season finale. While he will play and have an favorable matchup, the Magic could have a short leash with him in order to avoid suffering a more serious injury.

Update: Vucevic (leg) said he expects to play in Wednesday's season finale against the Hornets, Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel reports.

Analysis: Vucevic missed Monday's game against the Bucks with a leg contusion, but after going through shootaround Wednesday morning, he's on course to return as the Magic close out the regular season. Assuming Vucevic plays, it's unclear whether he'll be reinserted into the starting lineup or come off the bench behind Dewayne Dedmon.

Update: Vucevic will not play Monday against the Bucks due to a right leg bruise, Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel reports.

Analysis: The extent of the injury is unknown, but considering the diagnosis of a bruise it's likely nothing serious. Regardless, Orlando will hold its start center out of action, and he'll be joined in street clothes by Victor Oladipo and Aaron Gordon, who are both out with concussions. Coincidentally, the Milwaukee team Orlando hosts Monday is only a game 'ahead' in the lottery standings.

Update: Vucevic finished with 29 points (12-20 FG, 5-6 FT), six rebounds, two blocks, one assist, and one steal across 35 minutes during the Magic's 112-109 win over the Heat on Friday.

Analysis: Vucevic helped his Magic play the role of spoilers very well on Friday as they knocked off the playoff-bound Miami Heat. Vucevic had already been cooking off the bench since returning from his groin injury, and in five games back, he is averaging 23 points on 63 percent from the field, 8.2 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 1.4 blocks, and 1.2 steals in 28 minutes. A rematch versus league-leading swatter Hassan Whiteside and the Heat looms for Sunday.

Update: Vucevic will move back into the starting lineup for Friday's game against the Heat, Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel reports

Analysis: After missing roughly a month of action with a groin injury, Vucevic was back in action last Thursday versus the Pacers. Over the last four games since his return, he's been brought off the bench, with Dewayne Dedmon running with the starters. Vucevic has now had the opportunity to get his legs back under him, which has given coach Scott Skiles the confidence to put him back in the starting lineup. Dedmon will move into a bench role and could see a slight decrease in minutes. Over his last four outings since his return, Vucevic is averaging 21.5 points, 8.8 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.3 blocks over 26 minutes per game.

Update: Vucevic will again come off the bench Wednesday against the Pistons, Emily Austen of FOX Sports Florida reports.

Analysis: Vucevic missed most of March with a groin injury, but returned to action last Thursday against the Pacers and has played in each of the last three games. Despite arguably being the Magic's best offensive weapon, Vucevic has worked off the bench since returning, with coach Scott Skiles commenting that it's easier to monitor the big man's minutes in a reserve role. With only five games remaining on the season, it seems likely that Vucevic will continue to come off the bench, but if the last three contests are any indication, it shouldn't hinder his production much. He's averaging 23.7 points and 6.7 boards over that span.

Update: Vucevic scored 25 points (10-19 FG, 5-7 FT) while adding 10 rebounds, three assists, two steals, and one block in 32 minutes during the Magic's 119-107 win versus the Grizzlies on Sunday.

Analysis: Vucevic averaged 23 points on 79 percent shooting, five rebounds, two assists, 1.5 blocks, and 0.5 steals in 24 minutes per game during the first two games back from his groin injury. Though his field-goal percentage came back down to Earth on Sunday, Vucevic was impressive while exceeding 30 minutes off the bench. Meanwhile, Dewayne Dedmon started at center yet again, but saw only 13 minutes.

Update: Vucevic dropped 22 points (10-13 FG, 2-3 FT), four rebounds, three assists, two blocks, and one steal across 22 minutes during the Magic's 113-110 loss to the Bucks on Friday.

Analysis: Vucevic has posted two solid showings in a row since re-joining the lineup following a maddening March in which he was hampered by a groin injury. Though Vucevic may not see heavy minutes over the Magic's last six games, he is producing just fine in limited time. It's also possible Vucevic will remain in a reserve role, but starting center Dewayne Dedmon played just 11 minutes on Friday.

Update: Vucevic will come off the bench for Friday's game against the Bucks.

Analysis: The Magic will start Dewayne Dedmon once again at center Friday, leaving Vucevic to assume a role coming off the bench. Still, Vucevic was impressive in his first game back Thursday, posting 24 points in 25 minutes on 80 percent shooting. Look for Vucevic to gradually see more time as his groin injury dissipates, but for now, Dedmon will remain in the starting five.

Update: Vucevic (groin) went through shootaround and said he will play Thursday against the Pacers, Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel reports.

Analysis: Vucevic is finally set to make his return after missing all but three games in the month of March due to a strained groin. It looks like the Magic may limit him in his first game back, however, as coach Scott Skiles said that Vucevic would come off the bench in his return. With that in mind, Vucevic won't make for an appealing DFS play given the likelihood that he'll have his minutes restricted. If he makes it out of Thursday's game no worse for the wear, Vucevic could soon wrest the starting center job back from Dewayne Dedmon.

Update: Vucevic (groin) will remain out Tuesday against the Nets.

Analysis: Vucevic looks to be nearing a return after practicing Monday and going through Tuesday's shootaround, but he'll remain out, as he has yet to take any contact during workouts. His next opportunity to play will come Thursday against the Pacers. Expect Dewayne Dedmon to again fill in at center Tuesday.

Update: Vucevic (groin) remains questionable for Tuesday's matchup against the Nets, Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel reports.

Analysis: Vucevic hasn't played in nearly a calendar month while battling a strained groin, but he was back at practice Monday. Coach Scott Skiles was quick to note, however, that Vucevic has yet to do any contact work, which may not bode well for his chances of playing Tuesday. Still, the Magic will wait to evaluate Vucevic at shootaround, after which an update on his status should be available. If Vucevic is cleared to play Tuesday, he figures to reclaim his starting center spot from Dewayne Dedmon, though his minutes would likely be limited.

Update: Vucevic (groin) returned to practice Monday, Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel reports.

Analysis: Both Vucevic and Victor Oladipo (wrist) were present for Monday's workout, but coach Scott Skiles didn't comment on the availability for either player for Tuesday's game against the Nets. Since Vucevic's absence has already stretched to 12 games, there's a good chance the Magic may want to see him practice again before reinserting him into the starting lineup. Regardless, Vucevic looks close to returning, so if an impatient owner elected to drop him in shallower formats, he's worth scooping back up off the waiver wire.

Update: Coach Scott Skiles said that Vucevic (groin) could return to practice Monday, John Denton of OrlandoMagic.com reports.

Analysis: This marks the first indication of progress we've heard regarding Vucevic, who is sitting out a 12th straight game Saturday against the Bulls due to his lingering right groin strain. The Magic will likely want Vucevic to log a full practice session or two with the team before signing off on his return, so Dewayne Dedmon could still be in line for a few more starts at center.

Update: Vucevic (groin) won't play in Saturday's game against the Bulls, Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel reports.

Analysis: The Magic haven't outlined a timetable for Vucevic's return from a strained groin, and he'll now miss his 12th consecutive game on account of the ailment. The center's absence will continue to open up more minutes for Dewayne Dedmon and Jason Smith in the frontcourt.

Update: Vucevic (groin) was been ruled out of Friday's game against the Heat.

Analysis: Vucevic's absence Friday will make it 11 straight games he's missed due to a lingering groin issue. As has been the case lately, Dewayne Dedmon should earn another start in Vucevic's place for Friday's in-state affair. While the Magic have another game slated for Saturday, it's unclear if Vucevic is close to returning in the near future.

Update: Vucevic (groin) is already listed as out for Wednesday's matchup with the Pistons, Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel reports.

Analysis: Wednesday will mark Vucevic's 10th consecutive absence, as he continues to battle a strained right groin. The Magic have been hesitant to rule him out for more than one game at a time, however, so the big man should be considered questionable for Friday's contest against the Heat.

Update: Vucevic (groin) will remain out for Monday's matchup with the Celtics.

Analysis: Vucevic's string of absences will extend to nine games Monday as he continues to nurse a strained right groin. Expect Dwayne Dedmon to again start in his place, while Jason Smith remains in line for increased time off the bench. Despite Vucevic's extended absence, the Magic appear content to handle the situation on a game-by-game basis. Orlando is off Tuesday before continuing its road trip in Detroit on Wednesday night.
