WILLIE CAULEY-STEIN (C)
  • Jul 21 2016, 12:19 PM

Update: Cauley-Stein wrapped up his Las Vegas Summer League play averaging 7.2 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game over four games.

Analysis: The 7-foot-1 big man's summer league performance comes as a bit of a disappointment considering where he was just one year ago. It is understandable that many close to the Kings were expecting big numbers this summer after Cauley-Stein averaged 7.0 points and 5.3 rebounds per game during his rookie campaign. Although it would have been nice to see him blow away the competition, it still was just a four game sample. The former Kentucky standout is likely to see an increased role this season, especially if the Kings decide to part ways with star center Demarcus Cousins.

Update: Cauley-Stein put up 15 points (6-12 FG, 3-3 FT), six rebounds and three steals over 33 minutes in Thursday's 105-97 loss to the Timberwolves.

Analysis: The rookie got the starting call again in place of the resting DeMarcus Cousins, and responded with his second double-digit scoring effort over the last three games. Cauley-Stein has encouragingly received over 30 minutes of playing time in three straight, a trend that's likely to continue as Sacramento plays out the string. The Kentucky product is averaging 9.6 points, 5.8 rebounds, 0.8 assists, 1.6 blocks and 1.2 steals across 30.2 minutes over the last five games.

Update: Cauley-Stein started at center and finished with nine points (3-7 FG, 3-5 FT), five rebounds, three blocks, and one steal over 34 minutes in Tuesday's 115-107 loss to the Trail Blazers.

Analysis: Though the Kings welcomed back DeMarcus Cousins from a two-game absence, coach George Karl elected to stick with Cauley-Stein in a starting role to form an oversized frontcourt tandem. The arrangement didn't hinder Cousins' production, but Cauley-Stein struggled to exert his will, despite receiving a heaping helping of minutes with five rotation members sitting out in Rudy Gay (rest), Kosta Koufos (rest), Darren Collison (rest), Omri Casspi (hamstring), and Marco Belinelli (foot). The three rested players figure to be back for Wednesday's matchup with the Timberwolves, and while it won't necessarily result in Cauley-Stein losing out on starting duties, his minutes could take a significant hit.

Update: Cauley-Stein (shoulder) posted 14 points (5-7 FG, 4-4 FT), nine rebounds, three assists, two blocks and a steal over 39 minutes in Saturday's 115-106 victory over the Nuggets.

Analysis: The rookie shook off a shoulder ailment to tally a near double-double in place of the resting DeMarcus Cousins. Cauley-Stein now has four double-digit scoring outings in the last six games, and has received between 21 and Saturday's 39 minutes in the last seven. With the season winding down, the Kings are likely to continue giving their emerging big man an extended look.

Update: Cauley-Stein (shoulder) has been upgraded to probable for Saturday's game against the Nuggets.

Analysis: Cauley-Stein could step into a huge role if he's able to play, with DeMarcus Cousins out and Kosta Koufos (knee) probable, leading to a severe lack of depth in the Kings' frontcourt. Cauley-Stein figures to provide solid numbers in both points and rebounds, and would make a valuable daily fantasy option given he makes the start.

Update: Cauley-Stein is questionable for Saturday's matchup with the Nuggets due to a shoulder injury, James Ham of the Bay Area Comcast Sports Network reports.

Analysis: It is unclear when Cauley-Stein injured his shoulder, but it is apparently bad enough to land him on the injury report. With DeMarcus Cousins already ruled out for the contest, and Kosta Koufos questionable the Kings have a very thin frontcourt. If Cauley-Stein can play he should see a relatively heavy workload due to the lack of frontcourt depth. Look for an update on his status closer to game-time.

Update: Cauley-Stein will start in Friday's matchup with the Heat, Leo Beas of ESPN Deportes reports.

Analysis: Cauley-Stein will draw the start for DeMarcus Cousins. He is averaging 6.6 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 0.5 assists in 32 starts this season. It has been announced that Cousins will not play in the Kings' remaining road games, so Cauley-Stein will see his value increased in those games for the rest of the season.

Update: Cauley-Stein reocrded 13 points (6-12 FG, 1-2 FT), 14 rebounds, two assists, and one steal on 33 minutes during Monday's loss to the Trail Blazers.

Analysis: After two monster scoring performances, Cauley-Stein continued his hot streak with a career-high 14 rebounds in Portland. Demarcus Cousins (rest) was absent along with several other key players for the Kings, opening up big opportunities for the rookie. While his scoring dipped, his huge night on the boards is more than enough to keep his fantasy relevance alive.

Update: Cauley-Stein pitched in with a career-high 26 points (11-19 FG, 4-6 FT), six rebounds, three steals and two blocks over 29 minutes in Friday's 116-94 victory over the Suns.

Analysis: On a wildly successful night for the Kings' frontcourt and the team as a whole, Cauley-Stein exploded for a career-best scoring total, as well as his first game with more than 20 points. The rookie was outstanding on the defensive end as well, equaling a career high in steals. While it remains to be seen if the remarkable performance will garner Cauley-Stein additional playing time in the final stretch of the season, Friday's results certainly provided a glimpse at his considerable ceiling.

Update: Cauley-Stein (illness) saw just five minutes of action off the bench against the Bulls on Monday as he was a healthy scratch in the second half, James Ham of CSN Bay Area reports.

Analysis: Cauley-Stein missed the previous two games while dealing with an illness, but despite returning to health, coach George Karl didn't fully utilize the rookie during their loss Monday. As a result, Cauley-Stein is a risky option to deploy as he currently has an undefined role in the final stretch of the season.

Update: Cauley-Stein (illness) will play in a reserve role Monday against the Bulls, Jason Jones of the Sacramento Bee reports.

Analysis: Cauley-Stein was questionable heading into this game, because he is dealing with an illness. The illness caused him to miss the previous two contests, and it is unclear what type of workload he will see Monday. Quincy Acy will draw the start, so it is fair to assume the Kings may be a tad cautious with their rookie big-man's minutes.

Update: Cauley-Stein (illness) is listed as probable for Monday's game against the Bulls.

Analysis: Cauley-Stein has missed the Kings' past two games due to flu-like symptoms, which have apparently cleared up enough for him to be considered likely to play Monday. Should that transpire, the Kings would certainly welcome Cauley-Stein back into their rotation, although it's unclear whether the rookie would be able to immediately reclaim his starting spot from Quincy Acy.

Update: Cauley-Stein (illness) is officially out for Sunday's game against the Knicks.'

Analysis: Cauley-Stein is suffering from flu-like symptoms and will sit out Sunday. In his place, it seems Quincy Acy will get the start and eat up most of his minutes. His illness isn't likely that serious, and he will be a game-time decision for Monday's game against the Bulls.

Update: Cauley-Stein (illness) has been downgraded to doubtful for Sunday's matchup with the Knicks.

Analysis: Cauley-Stein doesn't appear to be showing much improvement with his condition while he battles flu-like symptoms, so look for him to sit out his second game in a row. His likely absence will open up extra court time for Quincy Acy and Kosta Koufos.

Update: Cauley-Stein (illness) is questionable for Sunday's game against the Knicks, James Ham of CSN Bay Area reports.

Analysis: The rookie big man sat out of Friday's contest due to flu-like symptoms and as of Saturday they still appear to be bothering him. If he's ultimately unable to go Sunday, expect Quincy Acy to start alongside DeMarcus Cousins. A further update on Cauley-Stein's status will be made available prior to tip Sunday.

Update: Cauley-Stein (illness) will not play Friday against the Pistons.

Analysis: The Kings will be without some of their important depth options Friday with Cauley-Stein sitting out along with Ben McLemore and Omri Casspi. Kosta Koufos could see a bump in minutes with Cauley-Stein sidelined, but in all likelihood DeMarcus Cousins will see most of the minutes at center if he can stay out of foul trouble.

Update: Cauley-Stein (illness) will play in Wednesday's game against the Pelicans, Jason Jones of the Sacramento Bee reports.

Analysis: Cauley-Stein was originally considered questionable due to illness but he said he'll give it a go. It's unclear if he'll be limited at all, but given that he's playing through it it appears unlikely he sees much of a minutes reduction. If he is limited look for Kosta Koufos to see some extra time.

Update: Cauley-Stein is questionable for Wednesday's game against the Pelicans due to illness, James Ham of CSN Bay Area reports.

Analysis: Cauley-Stein was announced as questionable on Wednesday evening. Given that he played 32 minutes in Tuesday's game it's likely the illness is just now effecting him. Expect an update on his status before the game begins. If he is unable to play look for Kosta Koufos to see some extra time off the bench.

Update: Cauley-Stein contributed eight points (3-3 FG, 2-2 FT), seven rebounds, one assist, and one block in 32 minutes during the Kings' 106-98 victory over the Lakers on Tuesday.

Analysis: Over the last three games, Cauley-Stein is averaging 10 points, 6.7 rebounds, and one block in 27 minutes per matchup. Kings' coach George Karl has changed the starting lineup frequently this season, so this situation is something to keep tabs on. With that being said, Cauley-Stein certainly performed well on Tuesday, and the rookie could be in line for a strong finish to the regular season if he can keep drawing starts and seeing substantial playing time going forward.

Update: Cauley-Stein is expected to be in the starting lineup for Tuesday's game against the Lakers, Gary Gerould of ESPN.com

Analysis: Coach George Karl has recently opted to go with Quincy Acy as the starter at power forward, but Cauley-Stein will instead get the call Tuesday, marking his 31st start of the season. Quincy Acy will likely head to the bench, but should continue to split the majority of the minutes at power forward with Cauley-Stein. It remains unclear who the Kings will start long term, so it's a situation to monitor moving forward.
