TROY DANIELS (PG)
  • Jul 09 2016, 17:36 PM

Update: Daniels agreed Saturday to sign a three-year, $10 million contract with the Grizzlies, Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports reports.

Analysis: Daniels had been a restricted free agent, which would have allowed the Hornets to match any offer the guard received, but the team bypassed that opportunity and instead negotiated a sign-and-trade deal that helped expedite Daniels' arrival to Memphis. In 43 appearances with the Hornets a season ago, Daniels averaged 5.6 points and 1.3 rebounds across 11.1 minutes per game. The 6-foot-4 guard has shown plenty of proficiency from distance in his career and hit 48.4 percent of his three-point tries in 2015-16, but he's not expected to see a dramatic increase in court time with move to the Grizzlies. He'll likely slot in behind Tony Allen, Chandler Parsons and Vince Carter for playing time on the wing.

Update: Daniels failed to score (0-5 FG, 0-3 3Pt) and added two rebounds over nine minutes in Sunday's 106-73 loss to the Heat in Game 7 of the first-round series.

Analysis: Daniels only made four appearances for the Hornets during the series, with all of his cameos coming in garbage time. He's occupied a low standing on the depth chart all season, typically only seeing time when injuries have thinned the Hornets' depth on the wing. Daniels will be a restricted free agent this offseason, and it's unclear if the Hornets have any interest in bringing him back.

Update: Daniels scored 13 points (5-9 FG, 3-7 3Pt) to go with four assists and three rebounds in Wednesday's win over the Magic.

Analysis: Daniels has been in and out of the rotation for most of the season, but he's stepped into a more significant role over the last week. The VCU product has averaged 22.8 minutes over the last four games, posting 11.8 points and 2.3 rebounds while shooting 53.1 percent from three. Daniels, a poor defender, could sink back to a reduced role in the postseason, but the team may utilize him as a shooting specialist off the bench.

Update: Daniels posted 17 points (6-10 FG, 5-7 3Pt), three rebounds, and one steal in 25 minutes during the Hornets' 113-99 win versus the Nets on Friday.

Analysis: Daniels stepped up with Jeremy Lamb (toe) sidelined, making his first appearance for the Hornets in the month of April. During Daniels' last three games, he combined to play 13 minutes, and this was his highest allotment of playing time since back in January. It's unclear how long Lamb will be out, but Daniels figures to continue seeing sufficient minutes off the bench during his absence.

Update: Daniels (coach's decision) didn't play in Wednesday's 105-100 win over the Nets.

Analysis: He's been excluded from the rotation in both of the last two games, as Jeremy Lamb has since taken back duties as the team's top reserve shooting guard. Daniels had appeared in all six of the Hornets' games form March 11 through March 19, but didn't exactly seize the opportunity, as he averaged 3.5 points on 38.1 percent shooting from the field and 31.3 percent from three-point range over 11.3 minutes during that stretch.

Update: Daniels had two points (1-6 FG, 0-5 3Pt) and four rebounds in 15 minutes during the Hornets' 107-99 victory over the Magic on Wednesday.

Analysis: Daniels saw 13 minutes or more for the third straight game on Wednesday. However, he played only 17 minutes combined through the first six games of March while appearing in only three contests. Furthermore, he appeared in just two of 10 February matchups, and Daniels hasn't been a regular role player since January.

Update: Daniels has been a DNP-CD in four of the Hornets' last five games.

Analysis: Daniels played just two minutes in Wednesday's win over the Pacers, breaking a streak of four consecutive DNP-CDs. The 24-year-old is among the league's best three-point shooters, but he doesn't bring much else to the table and has been buried behind Nic Batum, Jeremy Lin and Jeremy Lamb of late. Daniels has proven capable of being productive when given the opportunity, however, evidenced by his 28-point (8-11 3Pt), seven-rebound eruption in 31 minutes against the Kings on Jan. 25.

Update: Daniels delivered a career-high 28 points (10-15 FG, 8-11 3Pt, 0-2 FT) and seven rebounds in 31 minutes during the Hornets' 129-128 double-overtime win against the Kings on Monday.

Analysis: The seven boards and eight triples were also a career-best marks, with none bigger than the trey he hit with nine seconds remaining in double overtime to give the Hornets the win. Daniels was buried on the Hornets' bench during the first two months of the season, but he's starting to earn more meaningful minutes in January thanks to the injuries of Nicolas Batum (toe) and Jeremy Lamb (toe). He has scored in double figures in three of the last four games, and is making the case for a roster spot in deep formats.

Update: Daniels scored 17 points (7-15 FG, 3-5 3Pt) while adding three rebounds, two assists and a block in 32 minutes off the bench during Friday's win over the Magic.

Analysis: He ended up playing more minutes than starter Jeremy Lin, and Daniels has now scored in double digits in back-to-back games for the first time in his brief career. He's also drained at least one three-pointer in six straight games, and while he won't see this kind of workload every night, Daniels' court time is on the rise and he could be worth looking at in deep fantasy formats if you need a boost in three-pointers.

Update: Daniels tallied 11 points (4-7 FG, 3-5 3Pt) and two boards over 17 minutes in Wednesday's 109-95 loss to the Thunder.

Analysis: Daniels has seen double-digit minutes in four of the past five games, and seems to have eclipsed Brian Roberts as the Hornets' second guard off the bench with Jeremy Lamb (toe) missing the last four games. The Hornets ended up losing Nicolas Batum (toe) to injury during Wednesday's contest, so there could be an opportunity for Daniels to surpass the 20-minute mark Friday against the Magic if both Lamb and Batum are sidelined.

Update: Daniels tallied 13 points (5-9 FG, 3-7 3Pt), three rebounds, two assists, and one steal across 23 minutes in Wednesday's 111-102 loss to the Suns.

Analysis: The Hornets have been dealing with a few injuries in the backcourt of late, enabling Daniels to enter the rotation in three of the past five games. With Nicolas Batum (toe) sidelined and Jeremy Lamb (wrist) limited to seven minutes Wednesday, Daniels received his most extensive action of the season, and was able to take advantage of the opportunity by knocking down more than half of his shots. It's unlikely that a 20-minute role will regularly be in the cards for Daniels once Batum and Lamb are back to full health, but Daniels will at least notice a short-term bump in value.

Update: Daniels (personal) will not play Monday against the Kings.

Analysis: Daniels is away from the team Monday and has been excused from the game for personal reasons. The nature of his absence is unclear, but consider the shooting guard questionable for Wednesday's matchup with Washington.

Update: Daniels failed to see any action Wednesday when Charlotte defeated the Nets 116-111.

Analysis: Daniels hasn't been a major part of the Hornets' rotation in the early stages of the regular season, having only played 14 minutes in their first 12 tilts. He's stuck behind Nicolas Batum and Jeremy Lamb on the depth chart and will have a difficult time finding an increased role in the near future.

Update: Daniels (hamstring) managed to log six minutes in his season debut Tuesday against the Bulls, posting three points (1-3 FG, 1-2 3Pt) and one rebound.

Analysis: Daniels was questionable to play Tuesday, but ultimately was able to get his first minutes of the season. He's blocked behind Nicolas Batum and several other guards on the depth chart, and likely won't get enough minutes to contribute from a fantasy perspective.

Update: Daniels (hamstring) is listed as probable in advance of Tuesday's matchup with the Bulls.

Analysis: Daniels has been hampered by the hamstring since the onset on camp, and he's yet to play in any of the Hornets' regular season games. It looks as though he could make his debut Tuesday, though it's worth noting that he was active Sunday and did not play.

Update: Daniels (hamstring) is officially active for Sunday's game against the Hawks.

Update: Daniels (hamstring) is considered probable for Sunday's game against the Hawks.

Update: Daniels (hamstring) is considered questionable for Friday's contest against the Hawks.

Analysis: Daniels' status appears to be questionable at best Friday, as he continues to recover from a hamstring strain. If he's able to somehow take the court against the Hawks, his role will likely be very restricted for the Hornets, limiting his fantasy relevance to the deepest of leagues as the regular season gets underway.

Update: Daniels (hamstring) is considered doubtful for Wednesday's regular season opener, Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte Observer reports.

Analysis: Daniels has missed more than a week with a hamstring strain and he remains without a concrete return timetable. His doubtful status would seem to predict an inactive designation Wednesady, but official confirmation likely won't come until Wednesday afternoon.
