RICKY RUBIO (PG)
  • Jul 20 2016, 07:18 AM

Update: Rubio is dealing with a minor thigh injury and was sidelined for the Spanish national team's exhibition with Lithuania on Monday, Darren Wolfson of KSTP-TV reports.

Analysis: Rubio picked up the injury last week in an exhibition game against Angola, but was only held out Monday for precautionary purposes. The point guard is expected to be at full strength when the 2016 Summer Olympics begin in August.

Update: Rubio was held to two points (1-6 FG, 0-1 3Pt), but finished with nine assists, four rebounds, and a steal over 34 minutes in Tuesday's 124-117 overtime upset of the Warriors.

Analysis: The two points gave Rubio his lowest scoring night since March 8, and extended his streak of single-digit points to four games. As has been the case throughout his career, Rubio's broken jump shot remains the main source of his recent demise, as he's hit only 7-of-30 attempts (23.3%) from the field during that stretch. In spite of those struggles, Rubio has managed to become more of a three-point threat of late, as Tuesday marked the first time in the last 13 games that he failed to knock down a single shot from downtown.

Update: Rubio compiled 17 points (6-15 FG, 2-6 3Pt, 3-4 FT), 11 assists, seven rebounds, and three steals in 34 minutes during the Timberwolves' 121-116 victory against the Suns on Monday.

Analysis: Rubio was three rebounds away from a triple-double, but he also committed six turnovers. He has made nine threes in the last five games, upping his total on the season to 56 made triples. Meanwhile, this was his seventh double-double in March and his 13th of 2015-16. Rubio is closing the season on a high note, showing some serious improvement in the shooting department.

Update: Rubio recorded 20 points (5-9 FG, 3-7 3Pt, 7-7 FT), 11 assists, four rebounds, four steals, and one block across 33 minutes during the Timberwolves' 109-104 loss to the Warriors on Monday.

Analysis: Rubio matched his season-high with three three-pointers on Monday, and all three of these performances have happened in February and March. He has made 50 three-pointers on the season, which is five more than his previous high for a campaign, and Rubio is actually averaging 1.5 threes through 10 March matchups. It has been his best overall month as well, as he is averaging 13.1 points (44.6 FG, 39.5 3Pt, 93.3 FT), nine assists to 3.2 turnovers, 4.4 rebounds, 1.9 steals, and 0.4 blocks in 32 minutes during March.

Update: Rubio contributed 14 points (6-9 FG, 1-4 3Pt, 1-1 FT), six assists, three rebounds and a block over 32 minutes in Friday's 116-111 loss to the Rockets.

Analysis: The 25-year-old Spaniard continued his recent strong stretch of play, posting his fourth straight double-digit scoring outing, and fifth in the last six games. Rubio did see his streak of three consecutive double-doubles come to an end, but encouragingly shot 50 percent or better for the second straight game. A notoriously mediocre shooter, Rubio has nevertheless managed to demonstrate improvement in his field-goal percentages in each successive month of the campaign, and is currently posting a season-best 43 percent figure over nine March games.

Update: Rubio dished out 17 assists to go with 13 points (3-11 FG, 1-4 3Pt, 6-6 FT), three rebounds, and four steals in 36 minutes during Monday's loss to the Suns.

Analysis: Rubio's 17 assists tie a season high and the four steals are his highest total since Jan. 13. As usual, Rubio's contribution was squarely centered in the assist department and his double-digit scoring output (including a perfect night at the line) made his night even more fruitful. Rubio continues to have a solid fantasy impact.

Update: Rubio scored 13 points (4-9 FG, 3-6 3Pt, 2-2 FT), including the game-winning three-pointer with just 0.2 seconds left on the clock, while adding 12 assists, eight rebounds and three steals in 36 minutes Friday.

Analysis: The double-double was his 10th of the season but his third in the last four games and fifth in the last nine, as Rubio's scoring has become a little more consistent since the All-Star break. He still puts up too many lines like Tuesday's two-point, three-assist performance to be the reliable fantasy asset you'd expect after seeing games like Friday's, however.

Update: Rubio scored 10 points (2-6 FG, 0-3 3Pt, 6-6 FT) with 10 assists and five rebounds during 35 minutes in Monday's 108-103 loss to the Hornets.

Analysis: Rubio isn't a very efficient scorer, but he's one of the best free-throw shooters in the NBA. Over the past five games, Rubio is shooting 91.7 percent from the charity stripe, which has helped boost his scoring average a bit (13.6 per game over that stretch). Rubio has 27 assists over his past three games, so if he can continue to distribute the ball well he'll be worth paying for in daily formats.

Update: Rubio finished with 22 points (6-14 FG, 2-3 3Pt, 8-9 FT), six rebounds, three assists and three steals in 38 minutes during Wednesday's loss to the Wizards.

Analysis: Believe it or not, this is the first 20-plus point performance for Rubio since opening night against the Lakers; that's 54 games ago. Still, Rubio came to play on this day and made up for his low assist total with a solid scoring output and three steals. Rubio is hard to predict, but he'll find a way to contribute on most nights.

Update: Rubio had 12 points (2-3 FG, 2-2 3Pt, 6-6 FT), 12 assists, three rebounds, and two steals across 36 minutes during the Timberwolves' 114-105 loss to the Raptors on Wednesday.

Analysis: Rubio has now knocked down 34 three-pointers on the season, and Wednesday's 12-point performance on only three field-goal attempts was peak efficiency for any player, much less one shooting 36 percent on the season. Rubio is averaging 12 points, 10.6 assists, 4.4 rebounds, 1.4 steals, and 1.2 treys in 35 minutes over the last five contests.

Update: Rubio recorded 19 points (5-9 FG, 3-6 3Pt, 6-6 FT), eight rebounds, eight assists, and one steal in 37 minutes during the Timberwolves' 117-112 victory versus the Raptors on Wednesday.

Analysis: Rubio had his highest scoring game since the season opener versus the Lakers, during which he dropped a career-high 28 points and added 14 dimes en route to a win. Rubio hand't made a three-pointer in February until Wednesday, and was 1-for-18 from beyond the arc in the team's previous 10 contests. He has hit 31 triples this season, and needs to nail 14 more this season to surpass his previous high of 44 made treys back in 2013-14.

Update: Rubio recorded 10 points (4-10 FG, 0-2 3Pt, 2-2 FT), 15 assists, two rebounds, and one steal in 29 minutes during the Timberwolves' 119-115 loss versus the Lakers on Tuesday.

Analysis: Enjoying averages of 7.2 points, 10.4 assists, 3.4 rebounds, and 2.2 steals in 30 minutes per contest over the five most recent games, Rubio now has six double-doubles on the season. The elite passer and defender is shooting 35 percent from the field in 2015-16, which is ugly even when considering that he takes only eight field goal attempts per game. Still, Rubio's ability to contribute decently in most other categories (excluding threes and blocks) makes him useful across all fantasy formats.

Update: Rubio scored 15 points with 12 assists and six rebounds in 29 minutes in Saturday's win over Memphis. He matched a career high with 13 free throw attempts (11-of-13).

Analysis: Rubio hasn't improved his shooting in his fifth season as his 35.2 percent from the field would be a career low. However, he could be more of a factor on offense if he can get to the free throw line more by driving to the basket.

Update: Rubio recorded 18 points (6-11 FG, 2-5 3Pt, 4-4 FT), three assists, two rebounds, and two steals in 24 minutes during the Timberwolves' 117-87 victory versus the Suns on Sunday.

Analysis: Rubio is averaging 9.6 points (44.4 FG, 38.5 3Pt, 78.6 FT), 6.2 assists to 3.2 turnovers, four rebounds, 2.2 steals, and 0.2 blocks in 27 minutes per game over the past five contests. His assists and minutes are down of late thanks to the fact that he played only 24 minutes in each of the previous two match-ups. However, after sinking only three three-pointers through the end of November, Rubio made 12 in December, and has already drilled 11 in January.

Update: Rubio scored seven points (3-11 FG, 0-2 3Pt, 1-2 FT) to go with 10 assists and three steals over 33 minutes in Monday's 109-99 loss to the 76ers.

Analysis: Rubio is shooting just 31.3 percent from the field over his past five games, a mark that's awful even by his low standards. The Spaniard has at least averaged 11.2 assists during that same stretch, but any hope that the 25-year-old will eventually fix his broken jump shot has probably faded at this point.

Update: Rubio scored 10 points (2-6 FG, 2-4 3Pt, 4-6 FT) with 17 assists, three steals, and two rebounds over 36 minutes in a 94-80 victory over the Jazz on Wednesday.

Analysis: Rubio's 17 dimes ties his career high, as the 25-year-old continues to rank among Chris Paul, Rajon Rondo, and John Wall as a league-leader in assists. With Zach LaVine primarily being used as a shooting guard, and Tyus Jones not making much of an impact off the bench, Rubio's court time has never been safer.

Update: Rubio posted seven points (2-9 FG, 0-2 3Pt, 3-4 FT), 14 assists, four steals, and three rebounds in 37 minutes in Monday's 101-95 loss to the Spurs.

Analysis: Rubio is averaging 8.6 points, 3.2 rebounds, 9.6 assists, and 3.4 steals over the last five games. In spite of his solid assists and steals production, he's been pretty lackadaisical in grabbing boards. Rubio has struggled with consistency throughout his career, but as long as he's staying on the court (without an injury), it's a bonus. Given that he's getting a ton of minutes this season, and has only missed six games due to injury thus far, Rubio seems to be in a good position to hold fantasy value in shallow formats.

Update: Rubio recorded eight points (1-6 FG, 0-1 3Pt, 6-7 FT), 15 assists, four steals, and two rebounds in 28 minutes during the Timberwolves' 100-85 win versus the Nets on Sunday.

Analysis: Rubio has never made a decent percentage of his field goal attempts during his NBA career. Still, he finds a way to make his mark on games and the stat sheet by doing everything else really well, and he makes for a must-start option in most leagues. Rubio's 15 assists matched his season-high, which he set back on Dec. 5 versus the Trail Blazers.

Update: Rubio scored 12 points (3-10 FG, 2-6 3Pt, 4-4 Ft) while adding eight assists, seven rebounds and two steals in 32 minutes during Friday's win over the Kings.

Analysis: One game after coming within a point and two steals of a rare quadruple-double, Rubio again lit up the stat sheet Friday. He's also got a career-low 34.0 field goal percentage on the season, though, so while Rubio's been teasing some impressive single-game performances recently, his overall value remains decidedly limited despite his contributions in secondary categories.

Update: Rubio scored 5 points (0-4 FG, 0-2 3Pt, 5-6 FT) to go along with 12 assists and nine rebounds in 33 minutes during Wednesday's win over the Lakers.

Analysis: Rubio had a poor night shooting, failing to make a shot, but he made up for it with strong performances rebounding and passing. He hasn't been a high scorer all season, scoring in double digits just six times, equal to his number of games with double digit assists. Look for him to continue to be shaky in scoring but consistent in assist totals.
