PAU GASOL (C)
  • Jul 14 2016, 14:18 PM

Update: Gasol officially signed a two-year, $30 million contract with the Spurs on Thursday.

Analysis: Gasol's contract includes a $15.33 million player option for the 2017-18 season, which he could choose to exercise if he's able to continue to playing at a high level in his first campaign with the Spurs. The 36-year-old certainly didn't seem to be over the hill in 2015-16 with the Bulls, averaging 16.5 points, 11.0 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 2.0 blocks in 31.8 minutes per game while earning the sixth All-Star nod of his career. With Tim Duncan deciding to retire following a Hall of Fame career, Gasol represents a worthy inheritor to the starting center spot for the Spurs. He'll likely see more games off for rest and fewer minutes this season in accordance with coach Gregg Popovich's preference to limit the wear and tear on his veterans during the regular season, but Gasol still figures to be one of the top fantasy assets at the center spot due to his strong shooting marks from the field and free-throw line and his strong contributions across multiple counting stats categories.

Update: Gasol started 72 games for the Bulls in the 2015-16 season and averaged 16.5 points, 11.0 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 2.0 blocks in 31.8 minutes per game. He shot 46.9 percent from the field and 79.2 percent from the charity stripe.

Analysis: Gasol had another excellent season as a nightly double-double threat and continues to get in done even as he enters his mid-30s. The big man is expected to decline his player option and become a free agent this summer, and it's uncertain if he'll return to a Bulls team whose window for contention may have already closed. As a result, Gasol's fantasy value next season will largely hinge on where he ultimately lands this offseason.

Update: Gasol will not play in either of the Bulls' remaining games, KC Johnson of the Chicago Tribune reports.

Analysis: The 35-year-old had been playing through discomfort in his right knee over the last month, and he'll undergo an MRI on the knee this week to determine what type of rehab he'll require. With the Bulls officially eliminated from postseason contention Sunday, there's no need for Gasol to play through the soreness, and the likes of Cristiano Felicio and Bobby Portis figure to absorb the bulk of his minutes. Taj Gibson (ribs) and E'Twaun Moore (hamstring) have also been shut down for the final two games. Chicago plays at New Orleans on Monday before finishing out at home against the 76ers on Wednesday.

Update: Gasol scored 11 points (4-7 FG, 3-5 FT) while adding 12 rebounds, a steal and a block in 25 minutes during Saturday's win over the Cavaliers.

Analysis: It's his third straight double-double, seventh in the last eight games and 46th on the season, putting him seventh in the league behind DeMarcus Cousins in that category. The victory kept the Bulls' faint playoff hopes alive, although they need to win out and have the Pacers lose their remaining three games to sneak into the final seed in the Eastern Conference. Should Indiana beat Brooklyn on Sunday night, Chicago will have little left to play for but pride Monday in New Orleans.

Analysis: If the Bulls fail to make the playoffs (they remain three games behind the Pistons in the cellar of the Eastern Conference) it will be in spite of Gasol's excellent season. The 34-year-old has now averaged 15.9 points, 11 rebounds, and 2.7 blocks over his last seven games, and has averaged his highest assists total since 2012-13. After a day off, Gasol and the Bulls will take on Cleveland in a home match-up.

Analysis: He and Jimmy Butler have been almost the whole show for the Bulls lately as they try to make a late push for a spot in the postseason, and Gasol is now averaging 14.6 points, 11.0 boards, 5.2 assists and 2.2 blocks over the last five games. He'll get a day to rest before Chicago travels to Memphis on Tuesday.

Update: Gasol pitched in with 12 points (6-14 FG), 10 rebounds, three assists, a steal and a block over 32 minutes in Thursday's 103-100 victory over the Rockets.

Analysis: The 15-year veteran continues to grind it out during the Bulls' playoff push, amassing three consecutive double-doubles to close out the month. Gasol held his own in a tough battle down low versus Dwight Howard throughout the night, although he didn't come close to duplicating his stellar 28-point, 17-rebound double-double effort on Mar. 5 against this same Rockets squad. Gasol remains productive despite the wear and tear of the season on his 35-year-old body, and finished March averaging 14.3 points, 10.8 rebounds, 5.8 assists, 2.0 blocks and 0.6 steals.

Update: Gasol scored just 10 points (4-13 FG, 0-1 3Pt, 2-3 FT) but chipped in 11 rebounds, seven assists and four blocks over 33 minutes in Tuesday's 98-96 win against the Pacers.

Analysis: The Bulls ran their offense through the hot hand of Nikola Mirotic, but Gasol did an excellent job defending and distributing to help Chicago end its losing skid. It was Gasol's second straight double-double (39th of season) and third straight with at least five dimes. The win was a big one for the Bulls, so expect Gasol to bring his A-game down the stretch as they attempt to land the 8-seed in the East.

Update: Gasol recorded a double-double with 19 points (8-18 FG, 3-4 FT, 0-1 3Pt) and 11 rebounds to go along with five assists and a steal in 34 minutes during Monday's loss to the Hawks.

Analysis: The Spaniard was less effective in his return from a one-game absence with a knee issue, but it was all systems go on Monday as he delivered his typical array of production. Gasol's performance will be key to Chicago's stretch run and he should continue to serve as an excellent fantasy option once he is fully past his injury.

Update: Gasol suffered a mild ankle sprain in Saturday's loss to the Magic, but practiced Sunday and will play Monday against the Hawks, K.C. Johnson of Chicago Tribune reports.

Analysis: Gasol has recently been struggling with a nagging knee injury, so the fact that he's now nursing a new ailment doesn't help his cause at all. However, with the Bulls now sitting on the periphery of the playoff race, the team may not have the luxury of resting Gasol down the stretch. Though Gasol will be able to play Monday, his minutes could again be monitored. He's seen no more than 25 minutes over his last three appearances.

Update: Gasol (knee) scored seven points (3-6 FG, 0-1 3Pt, 1-2 FT) while adding eight assists, five rebounds, and a block in 22 minutes during Saturday's loss to the Magic.

Analysis: A lingering knee issue has cost Gasol five of the Bulls' last eight games, and the team is just 4-4 over that stretch, including losses in their last three, putting their postseason hopes in serious jeopardy. Expect Gasol to play as much as he can down the stretch, but if he's not 100 percent, he'll be a very risky fantasy play.

Update: Coach Fred Hoiberg said that Gasol (knee) will start at center Saturday against the Magic, ESPN.com's Nick Friedell reports.

Analysis: According to Hoiberg, Gasol will be restricted to around 25 minutes, about six minutes fewer than his season average. Gasol, who missed only one game with the sore knee, figures to see his restriction lifted in the contests to follow, but his minutes cap Saturday makes him a less appealing option than usual in DFS formats.

Update: Gasol (knee) is hopeful to participate in Saturday's matchup with the Magic, Nick Friedell of ESPN Chicago reports.

Analysis: Gasol is still considered questionable to go, but him indicating he is hopeful to go is obviously a good sign. He wants to see how he is feeling following pre-game warmups, so he will remain a true game-time decision. However, it appears that he is more on the probable side of questionable. If he cannot go, look for Taj Gibson, Nikola Mirotic, and Bobby Portis to continue seeing the bulk of the frontcourt work.

Update: Gasol (knee) is questionable for Saturday's matchup with the Magic, Nick Friedell of ESPN reports.

Analysis: Gasol missed Chicago's previous game against the Knicks, and is now considered questionable to go Saturday with knee soreness. He will likely be a true game-time decision. If he cannot go, expect Taj Gibson, Nikola Mioritc, and Bobby Portis to continue carrying the load in the Bulls' frontcourt. Expect an update on his status closer to tip-off Saturday.

Update: Gasol (knee) will not play Thursday against the Knicks, Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News reports.

Analysis: As expected, Gasol will sit out on the second night of the back-to-back set as he continues to struggle with soreness in his knee. Gasol was held to 25 minutes Wednesday versus New York, scoring just four points and grabbing five rebounds. The Bulls have not announced who will start in Gasol's place, but Cristiano Felicio got the nod when Gasol sat out on Saturday against Utah.

Update: Gasol (knee) is listed as questionable for Thursday's game against the Knicks, Nick Friedell of ESPN Chicago reports.

Analysis: Gasol played 25 minutes in Wednesday's loss to the Knicks, but he may sit out the second half of the home-and-home as he continues to deal with nagging soreness in his knee. The 35-year-old will receive treatment throughout the afternoon, with a decision expected closer to game-time. If he sits, expect Taj Gibson and Bobby Portis to see increased minutes.

Update: Gasol may remain on a minutes restriction Wednesday against the Knicks, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Analysis: Gasol posted a double-double in just 24 minutes of action Tuesday night against the Kings, and while the Bulls haven't set a concrete playing time cap, the expectation is that Gasol will have his minutes monitored for the next few games. This comes after the veteran sat out four games prior to the matchup with Sacramento due to soreness and inflammation in his right knee. As he proved Tuesday, Gasol can still be a valuable fantasy commodity in reduced minutes, but the restriction makes him a riskier play than normal.

Update: Gasol (knee) provided 14 points (4-10 FG, 6-8 FT), 14 rebounds, three assists, three blocks, and one steal in 25 minutes during the Bulls' 109-102 win against the Kings on Monday.

Analysis: Gasol made his return to the lineup Monday following a four-game absence due to knee inflammation, and filled up the box score despite playing under a minutes restriction. The Bulls are back in action on Wednesday versus the Knicks, and though Gasol could see an increase in playing time for that contest, the lesser quality of the opponent might instead prompt coach Fred Hoiberg to ease the big man along slowly.

Update: Gasol (knee) will play and start Monday against the Kings but he's expected to be on a minutes restriction, K.C. Johnson of the Chicago Tribune reports.

Analysis: The exact restriction on Gasol remains unannounced as the veteran will play for the first time since Mar. 11 after missing four games with inflammation in his right knee. With his reappearance in the rotation, the workload of Taj Gibson and Nikola Mirotic will likely diminish.

Update: Gasol (knee) is considered a game-time call for Monday's game against the Kings, Sean Highkin of Bleacher Report reports.

Analysis: Gasol went through shootaround Monday morning and said his right knee is pain-free, but the Bulls will continue to exercise caution and wait to see how it reacts as game time approaches. The 35-year-old has missed the last four contests, during which the Bulls have gone 3-1 with wins over the Jazz, Nets, and Raptors. If Gasol does return Monday, he could be limited, making him somewhat of a risky daily play. Cristiano Felicio would make another start at center if Gasol is ruled out.
