TREY LYLES (PF)
  • Jul 24 2016, 11:41 AM

Update: Lyles averaged 23.8 points, 9.0 rebounds and 1.4 assists across 32.0 minutes per game over five summer league appearances.

Analysis: Lyles was unquestionably the Jazz's top player throughout summer league play, which was unsurprising given that he had the most NBA experience of any player on the roster. The 6-foot-10 forward connected on 15-of-33 (47%) of his three-point attempts and reached at least 20 points in all but one contest. With his dominating performance, it's reasonable to expect Lyles to make some further strides after a promising rookie season, but the ceiling for his production remains a bit limited if both Derrick Favors and Rudy Gobert are able to stay relatively healthy in 2016-17.

Update: Lyles will play for the Jazz's summer league team, Aaron Falk and Tony Jones of The Salt Lake Tribune reports.

Analysis: Lyles will be one of the more accomplished players taking part in summer league, as he was a rotation player and occasional starter throughout his rookie season with the Jazz, averaging 6.1 points and 3.7 rebounds in 17.3 minutes per game over 80 appearances. With Derrick Favors and Rudy Gobert back in the fold for 2016-17, Lyles will likely be asked to serve as the Jazz's first big man off the bench.

Update: Lyles scored 18 points (7-15 FG, 2-6 3Pt, 2-3 FT) and added 11 rebounds, three assists and five steals over 39 minutes in Wednesday's season-ending 101-96 loss to the Lakers.

Analysis: Getting another start in place of the Derrick Favors (knee), the rookie capped off a successful campaign with his fourth double-digit scoring effort in the last seven games. The performance was a microcosm of the solid all-around game that Lyles demonstrated all season, during which he frequently excelled when given starting opportunities. The Kentucky product got more run with the first unit than would have been expected coming into the season due to an extended absence by Favors in late December and January due to a back injury, and the minutes helped to accelerate his development. He finishes the season with averages of 6.1 points, 3.7 rebounds, 0.7 assists, 0.3 steals and 0.2 blocks across 17.3 minutes. The big man also notably shot a solid 38 percent from three-point range, yet another sign of his considerable versatility.

Update: Lyles will draw the start in Monday's matchup with the Mavericks.

Analysis: Derrick Favors will come off the bench after missing Utah's previous game. Lyles will draw his second straight start, but Favors will likely still get a majority of the minutes barring any setbacks.

Update: Lyles totaled 22 points (9-16 FG, 4-8 3Pt), six rebounds, and two assists across 32 minutes during the Jazz's 100-84 win against the Nuggets on Sunday.

Analysis: Lyles drew the start with Derrick Favors sidelined due to knee soreness. It's unclear how much time Favors is expected to miss, but Lyles filled in fantastically, draining a career-high four triples. Monday's matchup versus the Mavericks will be treated as a must-win by both teams as the playoff race intensifies, so it's possible Favors will end up giving it a go. However, if Favors is out or limited, Lyles could be the one who benefits once again.

Update: Lyles will start in Sunday's matchup with the Nuggets Chris Dempsey of the Denver Post reports.

Analysis: Lyles is drawing the start due to Derrick Favors being held out. It's unclear why Favors is out but Lyles figures to see extra time while he's in the starting lineup. It remains to be seen whether or not Lyles will start beyond Sunday's contest.

Update: Lyles will come off the bench in Sunday's game against the Suns, Aaron Falk of The Salt Lake Tribune reports.

Analysis: Lyles started Friday's game in place of Derrick Favors (knee), but now that Favors has returned Lyles will return to his role off of the bench. If Favors is at all limited look for Lyles to pick up some extra minutes, but overall they should see relatively normal workloads.

Update: Lyles scored 18 points (7-16 FG, 2-4 3Pt, 2-4 FT) while adding five rebounds, a steal and a block in 35 minutes during Friday's win over the Timberwolves.

Analysis: There's no indication yet how long Derrick Favors (knee) might be sidelined, so Lyles could draw another start Sunday in Phoenix. If he does get the nod again, Lyles should see enough court time to be useful as a cap-saving DFS option.

Update: Lyles will draw the start in Friday's matchup with the Timberwolves.

Analysis: Derrick Favors will sit out this contest with a sore knee, and Lyles will will replace him in the starting lineup. Lyles started 29 games previously this season while Favors was out. He averaged 6.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 1.0 assists during that time. Favors could potentially miss a few more games, so Lyles could be in line for some extended action. The situation will need to be monitored going forward.

Update: Lyles contributed 14 points (6-12 FT, 2-2 FT), three rebounds, two assists and a block over 26 minutes in Thursday's 113-91 loss to the Thunder.

Analysis: With starter Derrick Favors tallying only 22 minutes in the blowout, Lyles received his highest allotment of playing time since Jan. 20. It was notably his fourth double-digit scoring outing in the last five games, with two of those instances notably coming in contests where Lyles played less than 20 minutes. Although he's firmly locked into the backup power forward spot, the rookie remains an appealing speculative near-minimum price play in daily formats, as well as an occasional source of points and rebounds in deep season-long leagues.

Update: Lyles posted 17 points (6-10 FG, 3-5 3Pt, 2-2 T), two rebounds, an assist and a pair of steals over 19 minutes in Thursday's 103-69 victory over the Suns.

Analysis: On a night where everything the Jazz touched seemingly turned to gold, the rookie contributed his second consecutive double-digit scoring effort, and third in the last five games. He also drained multiple three-pointers for the second straight contest, as he continues to flash an effective long-range shot as part of his impressive repertoire. Although he's been relegated to limited playing time since Derrick Favors' late January return from a 16-game absence due to back spasms, Lyles is still capable of the occasional productive outing in his bench role.

Update: Lyles scored 12 points (5-8 FG, 2-4 3Pt), to go along with one rebound and one steal during the Jazz's 94-85 win over the Cavaliers on Monday before getting ejected for an altercation with Channing Frye.

Analysis: Lyles showed some offensive versatility shooting 50 percent from beyond the arc. His 12 points were a bench high, but he could be facing further suspension from the league's Disciplinary Committee, pending further examination.

Update: Lyles recorded his first career double-double with 18 points (8-18 FG, 1-1 FT, 1-4 3Pt) and 10 rebounds to go along with one assist and one block in just 24 minutes during Monday's loss to the Celtics.

Analysis: The rookie came off the bench again, but he was extremely active and managed to co-lead the team in scoring while finishing second in field-goal attempts. Lyles was playing an expanded role due to the absence of Trevor Booker as he attends a personal matter, but the latter is expected to return for Wednesday's game versus Toronto, limiting his fantasy upside.

Update: Lyles posted eight points (3-5 FG, 2-2 FT), two rebounds and one steal during his 17 minutes off the bench in Tuesday's win over the Rockets.

Analysis: Lyles was only given single-digit minutes in the Jazz's previous two games, but he received five more minutes than veteran Trevor Booker on Tuesday. The rookie still has a steep learning curve ahead of him before he supplants Booker for primary backup duties behind Derrick Favors, although Tuesday's minutes distribution suggests it could happen at some point before season's end.

Update: Lyles totaled seven points (3-4 FG, 1-1 FT) and three rebounds in 10 minutes during the Jazz's 85-81 win over the Nuggets on Wednesday.

Analysis: The rookie is averaging only 12 minutes per game over the last five games and 18 minutes per appearance on the season--mostly as a result of his taking on extra time while Derrick Favors and Rudy Gobert were hurt earlier in the year. Lyles does a lot of little things, most of which don't show up in box scores, and he has seen his minutes reduced lately. As a result, he is not likely to be fantasy relevant barring another injury to one or two of the Jazz's starting big men.

Update: Lyles will come off the bench Friday versus the Timberwolves, Jody Genessy the Deseret News reports.

Analysis: Lyles did a nice job filling in for Derrick Favors over the last month, but owners should cut ties with him at this point. His minutes have decreased significantly since Favors returned on a minute restriction the previous two games, and they will only decrease further as Favors takes on his normal role.

Update: Lyles will draw another start Wednesday versus the Hornets.

Analysis: Lyles started a majority of the time during Derrick Favors' absence, and was expected to return to a reserve role Wednesday. Favors returned off the bench Monday, and looked good in 20 minutes of action. However, the Jazz have opted to have Favors come off the bench again Wednesday resulting in another start for Lyles. Lyles will likely return to a reserve role much sooner than later, and his role will continue to diminish with Favors back in action.

Update: Lyles pitched in with 17 points (6-10 FG, 2-4 3Pt, 3-4 FT), nine rebounds, two aassists and a block over 30 minutes in Saturday's 109-82 victory over the Lakers.

Analysis: The 20-year-old continued his string of solid performances in Derrick Favors' (back) stead, posting his third straight double-digit scoring effort and coming just a rebound shy of his first career double-double. Lyles has been maximizing his scoring opportunities over that three-game stretch, shooting 67 percent (20-for-30) during that span, while impressively tallying a 55 percent success rate from beyond the arc. Possessing the coveted traits of size and a deft shooting touch, Lyles has been a silver lining in the wake of Favors' prolonged absence.

Update: Lyles managed a career-high 19 points (8-13 FG, 1-3 3Pt, 2-4 FT), three rebounds, two assists and two steals over 39 minutes in Thursday's 103-101 loss to the Kings.

Analysis: The rookie continues to make significant strides each time he takes the court, now having posted consecutive double-digit scoring efforts for the first time in his career. Lyles' confidence seems to be growing nightly, and he's now shot an outstanding 70 percent (14-for-20) over his last two games. His 13 shot attempts Thursday were a career high, and represented the third game in January that he's hit double digits in that category. Lyles' development has been the one silver lining in Derrick Favors' extended absence, which has now reached 12 games.

Update: Lyles managed nine points (4-11 FG, 1-4 FT), nine rebounds, three assists, a pair of steals and a pair of blocks over 34 minutes in Thursday's 103-94 loss to the Rockets.

Analysis: The 2015 first-round pick's increased playing time has been the silver lining to the respective injuries that have sidelined Rudy Gobert (knee) and Derrick Favors (back). Lyles' minutes remained unaffected by Gobert's limited return Thursday, as the rookie continues to play in Favors' stead and increasingly capitalize on the opportunity. The 34 minutes on the court were a career high for the 20-year-old, who hauled in his second-highest total of boards on the campaign and also set new personal bests in blocks and steals. The performance may well have been Lyles' most well-rounded to date, and he now has solid averages of 8.8 points, 5.0 rebounds and 1.5 assists over a modest 26.0 minutes in four January contests.
