Walton has unfinished work with Warriors before Lakers job

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) Luke Walton was in no rush to leave his job as an assistant coach with the Golden State Warriors.
He won an NBA championship his first season, went 39-4 as interim coach in place of Steve Kerr to start this season and was part of a team that set the single-season record for wins in the regular season.
But when the Los Angeles Lakers came calling, Walton could not turn down the team he began his career with and which he helped win two NBA titles.

Lakers hire Warriors assistant Luke Walton as head coach

LOS ANGELES (AP) Luke Walton is coming home to rebuild the Los Angeles Lakers.
The Lakers reached an agreement Friday night with the Golden State assistant to become their head coach, dramatically choosing a young leader for their new era after Kobe Bryant.
The Lakers grabbed Walton just five days after they fired Byron Scott, who led the 16-time NBA champions to the two worst seasons in franchise history.
Walton spent nine seasons as a forward for the Lakers, winning two championship rings as a smart, steady contributor.

D'Angelo Russell

Jul 18 2016, 11:19 AM

Update: N/A

Analysis: While his flashy style of play has drawn ire, Russell was the best player on the floor for a talented Lakers squad that also included 2016 No. 2 overall pick Brandon Ingram. Russell went for 20 points, 11 rebounds and six assists in the Lakers' opening game, a win over the Pelicans, and followed up with a 22-point outing in Game 2, which included a dramatic, game-winning three at the buzzer to beat the 76ers. Russell's shooting was impressive, knocking down 47.7 percent of his field goals and 40 percent of his threes, but if there's one concern it's that he posted 18 turnovers compared to only 16 assists.

Larry Nance Jr.

Jul 15 2016, 15:34 PM

Update: N/A

Analysis: Initial reports suggested that Nance had suffered a broken bone at the base of his hand, but Friday's follow up provided much better news as he only has a sprained right wrist. The Lakers now have Nance listed as day-to-day, so his injury does not figure to hinder his offseason program too much.
