Hornets beat Magic 117-103, will face Miami in 1st round

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) If the Charlotte Hornets want to end a long playoff drought, they will have to beat their old nemesis, the Miami Heat, to advance.
The Hornets closed out their best regular season in 16 years with a 117-103 win over the Orlando Magic on Wednesday night behind Al Jefferson's 26 points to finish as the sixth seed in the Eastern Conference. They will face the Heat, the No. 3 seed, which swept the Hornets in the first round two years ago.

Hornets beat Magic 117-103, will face Miami in 1st round

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) Al Jefferson scored 26 points as the playoff-bound Charlotte Hornets closed out their best regular season in 16 years with a 117-103 win over the Orlando Magic on Wednesday night.

Shabazz Napier

Jul 15 2016, 07:52 AM

Update: N/A

Analysis: After acquiring Napier on July 5, the Trail Blazers wanted him to pick up plenty of run in the summer league so that he could distinguish himself as the team's top reserve point guard, but that never came to fruition. After sitting out the Blazers' summer league opener, Napier made his debut Sunday against the Spurs, but exited early after suffering a scalp laceration. He was deemed good to go in advance of Tuesday's contest, but was only on the court for 15 minutes before suffering a more serious injury. Napier is expected to be ready to go for training camp, where he may need to make more of a splash than originally thought if he hopes to maintain a roster spot.

Nikola Vucevic

Jul 14 2016, 09:35 AM

Update: N/A

Analysis: During his tenure with the Pacers, new Magic coach Frank Vogel prioritized defensive prowess first and foremost with his starting centers, and while Vucevic is a more skilled low-post threat than the likes of Roy Hibbert and Ian Mahinmi, his shortcomings on the other side of the court could make him an ill fit on a retooled Orlando roster. The team's decision to sign Bismack Biyombo, a relentless rebounder and rim-protecting center, to a four-year, $72 million contract this offseason would seem to suggest that even if he continues to start for the Magic, Vucevic will almost certainly see a decline in the 31.3 minutes per game he averaged a season ago. As one of the top-scoring centers in the league both of the past two seasons, Vucevic would still have plenty of appeal around the league, so it's conceivable the Magic could explore trading him in order to calibrate the roster according to Vogel's preferences.
